The School is the largest single school of its kind in South Africa. In Mathematical Sciences the School offers a vibrant educational and research environment covering a variety of fields, including Astrophysics and Cosmology. The School has many well-established national and international collaborative research linkages.
The School is expanding its research profile in the area of observational extragalactic astronomy and cosmology with investments in faculty and postdoctoral research positions, including support for travel and postgraduate students.
Members of the Astrophysics Research Centre (ARC) at UKZN have interests in theoretical and observational cosmology including Large-Scale Structure, Galaxy Evolution and the Cosmic Microwave Background, and are actively involved in the Atacama Cosmology Telescope Project, the Simons Observatory and the Rubin Observatory LSST. UKZN is leading the Hydrogen Intensity mapping and Realtime Analysis eXperiment (HIRAX) targeting dark energy and Fast Radio Bursts. ARC has strong international research links with a number of leading institutions abroad, including Princeton University, McGill University, ETH-Zurich, University of Geneva and the University of Paris. The applicant will have access to major South African telescope facilities, including the Karoo Array Telescope (MeerKAT), the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) and HIRAX. Together with ARC members, the applicant will pursue world-class research through the use of radio, optical and other multi- wavelength datasets for extragalactic astronomy and cosmology studies.
The successful candidate will lecture undergraduate and postgraduate level courses, actively participate in research activities, grow the Astronomy research programmes of the School, and carry out some administrative tasks as determined by the academic discipline leader, the line manager for this post.
The successful applicant will report to the Academic Leader of the Discipline.
