Logistics

Please contact Vicki Hooper with any detailed logistics question.

Transfer:  Bonamanzi is about 2 hours north of Durban’s King Shaka International Airport.  We will arrange for a bus to go up mid-day Sunday.  We will finalize the bus time(s) as flight arrangements are made.  Those arriving at other times may wish to rent cars to get to Bonamanzi.  Car rentals are usually quite affordable, with small cars typically available for as little as 200 ZAR/day.  All but the last few kilometres are on the N2 highway.  Note that there are tolls on the N2 (a total of 55 ZAR), so those who drive may wish to make sure they have some South African cash.  Also, virtually all cars in South Africa have standard transmissions, so you should check for an automatic transmission if you require one when booking a car.

Internet/phone:  Bonamanzi has free wifi.  The total connection is only 4 Mb/s, so please refrain from large downloads.   SIM cards and data are quite cheap in South Africa, and are readily available.  Since coverage in rural areas can be intermittent, we recommend going with either MTN or Telkom Mobile all-networks data (which will work on any cell network).  Note that many providers (for instance Verizon in the US) will unlock phones for international travel while still under contract, but this usually needs to be done in advance of departure.
